Theft victim hacks suspect with machete

A man upset that his TV was stolen in a burglary nearly cut off the hand of the man he blamed for the theft, Athens-Clarke police said.

An officer stopped a car for motor vehicle violations about 2:20 a.m. Wednesday and noticed a deep cut just above Troy Latrell Cooper's wrist, police said.

The officer arrested Cooper on two probation violation warrants, then took him to Athens Regional Medical Center, where he said he was attacked by a man at the corner of Paris and Campbell streets.

The man smashed the driver's side window of Cooper's SUV, and when Cooper got out, the man slashed him with a machete, cutting his wrist to the bone, police said.

A doctor told the officer if the machete struck more squarely on Cooper's wrist, the weapon might have cut off his hand, according to police. Doctors stitched the man's wound and put his arm in a splint and released him to police.
